Y11 students at Acorns follow AQA GCSE Science A course which is outlined below:
GCSE Science A gives students a good basic knowledge of Science by studying a single unit from each of the Core Sciences.
There are 3 separate 1 hour exams taken in Biology, Chemistry and Physics together with a Controlled Assessment. Each of the four components are worth 25% of the final grade.
It is suitable for students of all abilities and the course encourages students to understand theoretical concepts alongside developing practical Science skills.
Y10 & 9 students at Acorns follow AQA GCSE Biology
GCSE Biology is a linear specification, with tiered exams to facilitate all pupils in realising their potential. There are 2 equally weighted exams.
Paper 1 covers: Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response; and Bioenergetics.
Paper 2 covers: Homeostasis and response; Inheritance, variation and evolution; and Ecology.
Both papers are comprised of multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open responses.
In addition to the final exams, there are 10 required practicals to complete during the course, where pupils will apply and extend their theoretical understanding and knowledge.
