The KS3 and KS4 courses are designed for students who have an interest in designing and promoting new products. A practical approach will encourage you to design and make products with creativity and originality in a variety of practical activities, using a range of materials and techniques. You will learn how to develop and make products as well as Package, label and write instructions for your design proposal. Marketing tools, such as advertising and points of sale, can be used to supplement the making experience and help create products which can be evaluated for their commercial viability. This course is designed for those students who want to opt for a career in design.
At KS4 Time management is key to completing the course successfully. You will need to plan your work carefully. You will gain knowledge of how the design industry operates and learn about links to manufacturing and how products can be developed on an industrial scale. Literacy and numeracy are at the core of this subject and you will develop these through the design activities, and technical writing as well as comprehension of the Unit 1 exam materials.
The course consists of two units Unit 1 is the written paper and will cover theory set out in the AQA Specification. It is an assessed unit with an examination held in the summer at the end of the course. Unit 2 Consists of a single design and make activity selected from a range of exam board set tasks. This will take place over the entire course. It consists of a design folder of roughly 10 sides of A3 (Short Course) and 20 sides of A3 (Full Course), a practical product and packaging and marketing materials relating to your design proposal.
