We brought lots of festive fun to The Acorns School this week for our last few days of the autumn term. On Thursday 18 December, we held our annual ‘drop down day’ which saw pupils’ go off-timetable, as we replaced lessons with a whole host of Christmas-related activities.

We started the day around a fire pit, where pupils toasted marshmallows that they sandwiched between chocolate biscuits to make the beloved American campfire snack, S’mores. The incredibly tasty treats were washed down with an indulgent hot chocolate.

With full stomachs, pupils headed back inside to take part in a range of Christmas crafting and cooking activities.

In our arts room, pupils got creative by making stunning string wrapped star ornaments and intricately folded paper to create beautiful tree decorations. They then took to making more tree decorations, this time themed around ‘crass Christmas jumpers’ that saw them use materials such as felt, beads, wool and sequins.

One pupil commented: “These will look really nice on the Christmas tree and I’m happy I can take it home to my mum.”

Over in the food technology kitchens, pupils made chocolate covered cornflake and rice crispy cupcakes, before decorating them with a variety of chocolate treats like curly wurlys, fudge and chocolate buttons.

“I have loved making these cakes and I’m proud to be taking some home for my family,” a pupil said.

The afternoon saw pupils and staff come together to join in traditional Christmas party games such as pin the nose on Rudolph and getting ping pong balls into Christmas tree cups. Playing board games was a particular highlight for all involved due to competitiveness of staff and pupils, in a room filled with laughter. Pupils said they wished the sessions had lasted longer as they were having so much fun.

Pupils also tried their hands at table tennis and Wii Fit in the in the PE room and loved playing with Mr Finnegan.

We had a brilliant day celebrating the festive season with our pupils, and their reactions over the day suggest they did too!
