Next week, our Year 11 pupils will sit mock exams in a variety of subjects that have been designed to support them in preparing effectively for their actual GCSE exams in the summer.

Taking place from Monday, 19 January 2026 until Friday, 23 January 2026, pupils will be required to sit one exam every morning in conditions that reflect what will happen when the GCSE season begins in May. This includes the duration of the exam, working in silence, and adhering to all exam regulations (no phones, watches, notes etc.).

Citizenship

Mock exams form an important point within the Year 11 calendar and it’s vital that pupils approach next week with a positive, focused mindset and a clear commitment to trying their best. Whilst mock exams support our teachers to make informed grade predictions that pupils need as they begin applying to college, they are much more than that.

Mock exams allow pupils to:

  • Become familiar with exam conditions so they feel more confident and less anxious for their real GCSEs
  • Practice recalling information and answering questions under pressure
  • Identify their strengths and understand where they need to focus their revision efforts for gaps
  • Improve their exam technique so they can manage their time, interpret questions, structure answers and follow prompts effectively
  • Build resilience and independence by developing exam focus and stamina

We have been really impressed with how pupils have responded to the mock exams so far, and to support their preparation at home, we’ve put together our top 10 handy hints and tips to help them revise effectively, look after their wellbeing and approach the exams with confidence:

  1. Create a realistic revision timetable
  2. Use flashcards, develop mind maps, practice questions or try teaching the content to someone else as revision methods
  3. Break topics into manageable chunks
  4. Practice past papers under exam conditions
  5. Get eight hours sleep to support memory, focus and concentration
  6. Eat well and drink water
  7. Take movement breaks to reset focus
  8. Make time to relax
  9. Focus on progress, not perfection
  10. Ask for support

Following next week’s mock exams, we will be holding Year 11 Parents’ Evening on Thursday, 29 January which is the perfect time to discuss your child’s progress in the mock exams and their next steps. We will also be joined by a range of our college partners, including KGV College, West Lancashire College and Expanse Learning College, who will be on-hand to answer any questions about their courses.
